Horncastle, St Mary

All the details, opening times etc., below are specific to the 2017 Festival weekend that is now finished. Put next year’s date in your diary – Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September 2018.

Standing in the market place, this is believed to be the third church built on the site.

Completed in c1160, with the oldest part being the tower.  Nearby are parts of the old Roman wall.

The church has connections with Alfred Tennyson, The Dymoke Family (King’s Champion) and John Franklin.

Points of interest – beautiful stained glass windows, ten gilded angels in the nave roof, a lepers’ squint, medieval scythes (linked to the War of the Roses or the Lincolnshire Rising) and a previous vicar who became Archbishop of Canterbury. Exhibition of ‘Colours’.
