Horncastle, St Mary

Standing in the market place, this is believed to be the third church built on the site.

Completed in c1160, with the oldest part being the tower.  Nearby are parts of the old Roman wall.

The church has connections with Alfred Tennyson, The Dymoke Family (King’s Champion) and John Franklin.

Points of interest – beautiful stained glass windows, ten gilded angels in the nave roof, a lepers’ squint, medieval scythes (linked to the War of the Roses or the Lincolnshire Rising) and a previous vicar who became Archbishop of Canterbury. Exhibition of ‘Colours’.
